Xylenes
What are Xylenes?
Xylenes are a group of three closely related aromatic hydrocarbons known as o-xylene, m-xylene, and p-xylene. Each has the same chemical formula, C₈H₁₀, but differs in the position of the two methyl groups attached to the benzene ring.
Xylenes occur naturally in crude oil and petroleum products and are also produced industrially for use as solvents and chemical intermediates. They are common components of gasoline and are frequently detected at petroleum release sites along with benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene as part of the BTEX group.
Because the three xylene isomers have similar environmental behavior and remediation characteristics, they are commonly evaluated together as total xylenes during site investigation and groundwater monitoring.
